What is TBOO?

TBOO stands for The Business of One

The Business of One (TBOO) is a structured approach to establishing an independent business for professionals moving out of employment.

It brings together the decisions, materials and practical steps required to put a business in place, and handles them as a single, integrated process.

Why TBOO exists

Professionals leaving established roles usually know their work extremely well.

What they have rarely had to do before is build the business around that expertise.

In practice, this often leads to delay, fragmentation, or reliance on multiple providers working in isolation.

TBOO was created to remove that complexity and ensure the business is established properly from the outset.

Background

TBOO developed from James Johnstone’s work advising senior professionals moving from institutional roles into independent practice.

Many had spent their careers inside organisations with extensive support structures, including government, military and large institutional environments. When those structures fell away, the practical task of establishing the business around their expertise was often unfamiliar.

TBOO grew out of helping professionals at that level navigate the transition in a structured and consistent way.
